Disk size query

When i do a df -k -h my RH7.1 box reports that i have a 15GB drive but i have a 20GB drive. Why is this? How do i get the OS to see the whole disk and free up the other 5GB

The whole 20GB is partitioned for linux? Post the output of df -h

its definately a 20GB drive.

What does this show: /sbin/sfdisk -l

You lose some space when formatting a drive. 20GB refers to the unformatted capacity of the drive, but you seem to be missing between 2.5-3GB. I don't remember any bugs with df in RH 7.1 about incorrectly reporting disk space.

2.5 - 3 gigs is about a normal amount of loss after formatting a drive.

You're right, it is pretty close. I ususally count on seeing about a 10-20% loss.

Seems like quite a lot of lost disk! So, from 40GB i would be looking at losing ~4GB?

Holy snot Batman! You've got to be kidding me, a few gigs loss from a format?! Can't say I have EVER experienced that. I have a 20 gig and I stay firmly at about 19.5 gig after a format. I do not want to be smoking whatever you guys are smoking, that would piss me off. I paid for a 20 gig not a 15 gig...damn!

Hmmm, must be a 22GB hard drive. :

But I still think he seems to be showing a little lower then he should be. I had one old Maxtor drive once that would only show 99% used when I formatted it under Linux.
