    Re: Disk size query

It looks like all the cylinders are allocated. I

The only thing that is wierd is the last line, I have never seen that before:
    start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,1,1)

Other then that I see nothing wrong. Will try a google search on the last line when I get the chance. Unless someone beats me to it.

Ok apparently what this error means, start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,1,1) is the partition table is corrupt. Try this and see what errors it produces.

    sfdisk -V /dev/hda

I don't believe there is a way to fix this other then deleting the partitions and starting over. :-/

    Re: Disk size query

That doesn't sound too good. Is this likely to cause me major problems in the future? I have everything on this drive and can really do without losing it all.

Can i buy another drive and backup then re-partiton the faulty drive? What would you reccommend?

    Thanks

    Re: Disk size query

    sfdisk -V /dev/hda gives ....

    partition [6]: start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,0,1)
    partition 6: start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,1,1)
    /dev/hda: OK

    What d'ya reckon?

    Re: Disk size query

    sfdisk -V /dev/hda gives ....

    partition [6]: start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,0,1)
    partition 6: start: (c,h,s) expected (1023,254,63) found (1023,1,1)
    /dev/hda: OK
If the problem is only with partition 6 it might be possible to just delete and re-create it. hda6 is just your swap partition. Unknown whether it may cause other problems. Turn your swap partition off then use fdisk to delete, re-create it then turn it back on. Proably should do this from runlevel 1.

As the root user: telinit 1
    turn swap off: swapoff -a
use fdisk, delete, create the partition again
    reboot

You could just turn the swap partition back on and switch back to runlevel 3, but I have seen problems at times switching from runlevel 1 to runlevel 3.

    Re: Disk size query

    Thanks

I followed the instructions and when i enter sfdisk -V /dev/hda it reports only /dev/hda: OK.

    My setup is now

    Disk /dev/hda: 2481 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot Start End #cyls #blocks Id System
    /dev/hda1 * 0+ 6 7- 56196 83 Linux
    /dev/hda2 7 2480 2474 19872405 5 Extended
    /dev/hda3 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
    /dev/hda4 0 - 0 0 0 Empty
    /dev/hda5 7+ 2011 2005- 16105131 83 Linux
    /dev/hda6 2012+ 2480 469- 3767211 82 Linux swap

Still a tad upset about my missing 5GB though :'(

    Regards
