On Linux kernels and Via chipsets

    Quote:

A few months ago, people who compiled thier Linux kernels with "Athlon Optimisations" were having major problems on certain VIA chipsets (KT133, KT133A, some reports on the KT266, etc..), but only on some motherboards/bios revisions. The same people, if they compiled their kernels for P6 optimisations did not have any problems. Athlon optimisations in the kernel means that the kernel modifies its memory read and copy routines to use the 3dNow prefetch instructions to get better memory performance.

hmm, guess what chipset i have......... (KT-133A - Soltek 75KAV board)

I was (and still am) having great problems getting a kernel compiled with athlon optimization. On boot, before it loads the modules i get an error saying it can't load /sbin/modprobe
Does anyone know what this means? Ill try and get the full message to someone if they want any more information

    Thanks,

Would need the full message. That seems to indiicate it can't find a module to load. Probably left out something you needed in your kernel config.

Well we have him almost all worked out on his kernel problem I think. He only is having problems with starting the x server now, and I dont' think that is a kernel prob...we'll see, so this did help him, Way to go Jim! Want a cookie?

Well thankyou everyone for helping me get my kernel recompiled

My problems with the X server was the Nvidia drivers needed to be re optimized for my kernel, instead of using the default Mandrake ones

I'll think of writing an OMP later to help other people if they ever want to do a recompile
    Thanks again

Yeah - when i sued to use mandrake - the nvidia drivers (the ones in by default) appeared to be crap - or not working in some places (dunno maybe jsut my system), but i got some from nvidia.com (i think they were only for XFree86 4.0.2) and they are excellent!

I don't know about excellent. They are very unstable from my experience as well as many others.
