Thread: Which Distro now?

    Which Distro now?

After spending close to 50 hours downloading Mandrake 8.1, im sorry to say i am not impressed.
The install program is GREAT!, but as soon as i boot into it for the first time, it asks me to register and put in all my personal details! no way.
And i also see on the website, they are encouraging you to join their "Mandrake Linux Users Club" for $120/year.

    So now is the question:
What distro would you people recomend?
I basicly have it down to Slackware, SuSE and Debian
If you could recomend one and say why you recomend it, its good points it would be much appreciated.
Also why i shouldn't take other ones would be nice

    Many thanks

Hi, trommaster,I have tried Drake and did not like it either tho it's one of the most popular distros out there. You already posted three others which are great.I'm a SuSE freak myself. You might consider Redhat or Libranet also! I've tried them all and the ones I like best are : SuSE and Libranet (Debian) then Redhat.Like Slack but it took some getting used to as I'm still a bit new to this Linux thing and it is a tad unforgiving to folks like me. Just my thoughts on this.

    Slackware!

Not many uneeded programs added, easy installalation, BSD style boot process, etc.

    Re: Which Distro now?

Did you actually hear valid information? Or was that speculative gossip due to the site being down? If they do ever decide to stop development of Slack, I can't see the core users not keeping it alive on there own anyways.
