There never was any membership dues tried or otherwise. It was just a voluntary contribution made by members. A bunch of us send Colverm some costs to cover hosting and stuff. I'm sure the money runs out and Cloverm decided to move the site to his own server at home with DSL link due to various limitation with hosting provider (PHPWebhosting.com). I run a few sites off of that service and hadn't had any problem but the support can be slow at times (and its' stuff treating you like you don't know jack about Linux systems).

No hard feelings towards anyone who's not happy, but don't make it a slap to the face of a decent fellow.
I don't think anyone is attacking about why or if there is a need for merger. LJR had slow traffic and I believe OpenFree is even slower traffic (by looking at active threads and its dates). So it's not like we are no use here.

It was just the way it was handled. There was no hints of merger as well as the communication. I agree that it's Cloverm's own web site and all so he can do what he pleases. It was just the slap that many of us had to endured. I (like many others) stick around LJR for its community. I asked no more than 10 questions in all my time at LJR. Usually whenever my questions are, it is over the scope of our members. Like others have said, there are plenty of Linux support forums out there.

And many of us agreed that it was not Peter's fault either. He is at the receiving end of things. If I were him, I'd be more than happy to have the site like LJR (and its members). He tried to reach out as well although the work load can be overhelming for him at this time but he DID answer my PM.

Like I said, many of us have no real hard feelings. It was just a shock so let them have a little bitching.

It also doesn't cost too much to host a site like LJR. It was just the time it takes to maintain it. I know it was also the real reason why Cloverm let it go. I'm also familiar with at least 4 other BBS software and many layouts so it wasn't really new for me. For me, any kind of ads is a big turn off, period. That's why many of us offer Peter to help the cost if he might consider taking the ads out but there was no take so that's that.

I had that as well but I worked it out myself before Peter needed to step in.

I was reading this thread and thinking "what ads"...turns out my browser has ad blocking I turned it off, and oh yeah there they are.
Okay, I need to turn it on. What browser and where to set it? I could lurk around and dig it but I'm too lazy (and short of patient, can't you tell?).

It's not like we're seeing flashing green and yellow ads for online casinos or anything.
    Never says never.

Besides...I never check out the front page. It's always all about the forums for me.
Me neither but the ads are also in the forum. No biggie though.

I've seen almost exclusively posts from old LJR regulars since the merger announcement.
That's because all those bitching going on.

Openfree regulars, where are you all? Come on out and say hello!
I've seen a few but that's about it.

I wouldn't mind so much, provided all my old stats like # posts and join date could be transferred.
That's very easy to manipulate as long as you have access to database. I've set a join date to be about 25 years earlier on a forum that I once run to disguide the true identity of a few members. That's easy.

The browser I'm using is Camino (I'm on my Mac OS X laptop). However, I recall from the days when I used to use Firefox that there's a ripping good extension called AdBlock that used to work like a dream. Give it a go and see if it works.

I later switched to Epiphany and couldn't find anything equivalent. There are murmerings that something is starting to come about for epiphany, but nothing that your average end user can use yet.

EDIT: Link to Adblock extension: here

I wouldn't mind so much, provided all my old stats like # posts and join date could be transferred. When I left LNO, I had somewhere in the order of 1000 posts. All of those were nuked when I jumped ship to LJR, and I had to start from scratch. Now here I am with 2000-something posts, and I've been hacking away to get this number for the past 5 years. Starting from scratch back in the LNO days was a pissoff, but no big deal given that I was much more active in forums and in linux in general back then. But nowadays I'm a busy man with all kinds of other interests, and the idea of resetting my post count to zero and my join date to tomorrow doesn't really honk my horn. I like the fact that I have 4 digits to my post count, and I like the fact that I've been using this same account for 5 years. To restart from scratch wouldn't really be the same.
Agreed. LJR is, well, gone. Period. It will never be back. So now we must move on and the fact that all of our work has been brought over to OpenFree is a plus. Yeah, I wish we had discussed this before hand -- no one likes to be the last to know and, trust me, my heart nearly stopped when I read the first announcement of the merger. But think of how bad it would have been if all our history were lost. As is, we still retain the majority of the good we did, our posts and PETs, and hopefully our friendships and community. Now we are part of something new, and we should try to bring the spirit of JLR with us and make OpenFree better for all. In that way, part of LJR will live on.

As is LinuxFoo.org, another recently integrated site. And along with the original site, alot of the community has gone MIA as well. I don't think the merger was taken quite as well as some of the LJR members took it.

Personally I look forward to being apart of this new community.
