Thread: Debian Kernel Upgrade

    Debian Kernel Upgrade

I had debian sid with nvida video card using the nv driver with kernel 2.6.10.

Recently I did a dist-upgrade and everything seems to have worked until i installed kernel-image-2.6.15-k7. Before installing the new kernel I was able to get into the desktop.

Now I get an error message about the video drivers not configured properly in the graphics error screen, with the choices of Ok and No. I forget exactly what the message say but I can't use the arrow keys to pick a choice. In grub picking the older kernel gives me the same problem.

It also looks like the screen is frozen, pressing Ctl-Alt-Backspace doesn't take me to the CLI, I have to press the power button.

    Any ideas/suggestions on fixing this?

    Thnx.

I'm not able to do anything at this point but reboot using power switch. I am able to boot into Recover Mode.

This what I see in the log:

    (**) Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    (**) Configured Mouse: Device: "/dev/input/mice"
    (**) Configured Mouse: Protocol: "ImPS/2"
    (**) Option "CorePointer"
    (**) Configured Mouse: Core Pointer
    (**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

    No such file or directory.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device

    (II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
    (WW) No core pointer registered
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD)

    Thnx.

    Re:Debian Kernel Upgrade

It seems that when I upgraded, it went from XF86Config-4 to xorg.conf so now when I run, dpgk-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and go through configuration stuff, it ask if I want framebuffer support.

If I choose FB support, I still can't get X to start but I can choose the error screen option, which is NO, and it will drop down to cli.

Looking at the xorg log, it show No Screens Found or something similar. But if I don't choose FB support, I get the above errors about the mouse issue and it locks up, I have to cold boot.

How can I get framebuffer support installed?

    Thnx.

Well, I ended up reinstalling Debian recently. I got tired of fiddling around with the problem.
