As for upgrading browsers -- update slackware first. Then worry about that part.
YUM is a package management suite for RPMs. This is probably quite useless to you since you would be not using RPMs.
Hi,
Running Dual Win98/Slack8 box. Just got DSL Yahoo to connect to internet!Yeah! Been too long since I installed Slack8. Need help now just to get current web browsers installed. Do I remove old mozilla, netscape etc. if so how? Do I upgrade Mozilla - again how?
What's? What is YUM? Was referred to it. Thnx

What he said. Slackware 8 is outdated by now. You could manually grab an updated browser package, but it might not work on your system. Alternatively, if you don't want to upgrade to a newer version of Slackware, you can try downloading firefox directly from www.getfirefox.com, and follow their instructions. However, you should really consider upgrading.
YUM is a package management tool for systems that use RPM packages. Slackware does not use YUM.
Just now learning to use slack8, it works pretty good. Upgrading means chnge vmlinuz in boot system :'( Havent upgraded any hardware still using SY6BA+IV,15gb Maxtor ata 66 for slack8, 160gb Seagate ata100 for win98se. I got the monster hdd b/c I couldn't find a new 20gb maxtor. Do I need the fastest, bigest, most automated. So Y upgrade to 10.2? Thnx . ??? http://www.linuxnewbieguide.org/chap9.php#tarball
You could try slapt-get:
slapt-get -install firefox-1.5
I'm not sure about the version number, maybe you need it, maybe not
Aljosha
what is slapt-get-firefox? :-\ If I get brave and go onto upgrade slack8, do I hav to uninstall or reformat hdd and setup all the partitions again? thnx :'(
If you were to upgrade to a newer version, the Slackware installer should theoretically take you by the hand, and you shouldn't need to reformat.
However, I don't know if an upgrade from 8 to 10 is possible.
Slapt-get is a package managing tool similar to yum, but available for Slackware.
Documentation can be found here. http://software.jaos.org/#slapt-get
If you decide to not upgrade, you could try the following to update firefox:
Open a terminal/console, however you used to call it
Type:
If it doesn't work, try:Code:slapt-get -install firefox1.5
If that doesn't work, try:Code:slapt-get -install firefox-1.5
Slapt-get is a tool for easy installing packages. It downloads them and installs them. It keeps track of them, so you could remove them easily.Code:slapt-get -install firefox
Good luck!
I believe that you will need to re-install Slackware 10.2 Freshly or try and use the upgrade.sh that Patrick Volkerding has given (but usually its only 1 version). Follow the instructions mentioned in the upgrade.txt in the CD. Also, I believe the package is called, mozilla-firefox and not firefox. Have a great time with Slackware!
it seems that you are using some very outdated stuff there.
You may aswell just backup your data from you Slack8 partition, and just bite the bullet and Update to Slackware 10
You will have all of the new packages, and you will have Slapt-get, making it very easy for you to install new stuff from then on, and to keep your system up to date.
