    Debian 3.1 - OMFG!

Well, I took the plunge and decided to try and install the notoriously difficult Debian. Well, let me tell you this, Debian 3.1 is not difficult to install at all. The whole install was complete in a matter of minutes (literally about 12 minutes), and I had a functional desktop. I installed the nvidia drivers with no problems, and I have a fantastic desktop because of this great Distro. Forget about Ubuntu, install Debian 3.1! Out of the box, I have the ability to play dvd's, wmv, mpeg, mp3, avi, flash, shockwave, real, and all sorts of other formats. Apart from that, I have installed literally dozens of games (commercial and non commercial games) and they have all completed with absolutely no problems (which is a better result then i got with ubuntu and kanotix). Anyway, check out Debian 3.1 because it will wash your dishes for you!

Now that's a convincing endorsement  ! Think I'll give it a try alright. Been playing around with Kanotix (off and on), and it's quite true that its capabilities can be a bit limited.

Completely agree, ive been using sarge for about 2 and half years now. If you installed ubuntu you can install debian. There essentialy one in the same. Im glad to see someone else agree with me i was never overly impressed with ubuntu or the like , just edit the repository list and your set to go. Good luck with sarge im on etch right now. Apt-get is an excellent package management system, however sid understandably is never the easiest to pley around with.

Here a guide i wrote a while ago, nothing major just something small, http://linuxteens.com/wiki/Debian_Installation

I'm gonna try the net-install. Never tried it before, so it should be interesting. Besides... I'm tired of d/l'ing a bunch of CD's just for one distro, which is an advantage with the Debian spin-offs such as Knoppix, Kanotix, Ubu... Just one CD install with those.

Yeah, let me tell you this, I have a feeling when I use Debian 3.1 like, "I have a Gem". Everything works so well, and quickly too! The install went really quickly with no problems at all. I managed to get the Debian dvd from the latest Linux FOrmat magazine. Yeah, it's nice to have the working vanilla versions of all the programs. For example, Noatun actually lets me increase the playback speed of my music, it never let me do that with any other distro but Mandrake 9.0 (i've had about 20 distros since, and I have always had noatun). Fantastic distro!

I was figuring since I've played a bit with Ubuntu and MEPIS, both Debian based, that I might as well try Debian. So, I was glad to see this endorsement.

I'm only wondering how much work getting this wireless card to work will be. MEPIS was no problem at all, where everything else I've tried so far I was going to have to mess with ndiswrapper and getting the drivers.

Probably be at least a week before I get it tried out, but I'll let you know.

    Debheads eh?

I have ALWAYS wanted to do Debian, that is great.

Now, do I give up Ubuntu? Can I?

    How easy?

Fatal, I believe that the Debian installer is the Ubuntu installer, so if you can install Ubuntu, you can install Debian. One thing that Debian has over Ubuntu is the packages that you get to start with, and the multimedia support is great, with even wmv supported right out of the box! DVDs work too! I am thinking about getting the 64bit version of Debian when I get some time and try that.

You should give it a try, it really is fantastic.
