Floating ads

Firefox does a pretty good (but not perfect) job of blocking pop-up ads. But is there any way of blocking the other pest, the floating ads? They are more annoying than pop-ups.

Disable (uninstall?) flash??

I don't see it on my Firefox on Ubuntu linux with no flash plugin installed.
