Grip ripping very slow

I'm trying to rip some of my CD's, and grip isn't ripping at any faster than 2x.
I'm using cdparanoia to rip, and I cant see any options that could speed it up.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I ran into that a few days ago. If you are using a newer distro, you are probably not using ide-scsi emulation your your cd rom. You might want to make sure that DMA is enabled on the cd rom, and as a last alternative, you can try adding

hdc=ide-scsi

to your boot parameters. SCSI emulation should make ripping faster.

I'm about ready to give up. Using grip, with DMA enabled, it did rip faster, but the max was 8x. I even tried passing the -S32 flag to cdparanoia, but it didn't seem to have any effect. Once the ripping was finished, the encoding never took place. It created a bunch of mp3 files, but they were all only 4k. I'm using lame to encode them.
Right now, I'm ripping using the console, and it seems a little quicker, I just have to work out how I'm going to encode these to mp3.
If it were up to me, I'd definitely be using ogg, unfortunately, my mp3 player doesn't support ogg, so I have to go mp3.
So if anyone knows of a decent app that will turn wav files to mp3, and sort out id3 tags, let me know.
The final option is, I'll go to my gf's PC, and use windows. I really dont want to, but at the moment, its looking like the best option.

Well, I decided to see what else I had available, and K3B came to the rescue. It rips fast, and encodes directly to MP3.
Brilliant.

Sound juicer works well, but for some reason, it will only rip to FLAC or ogg.

K3b really is a great app, I've been very very impressed with it.

I think K3B is much better than the Roxio and Nero equivalents. It's more intuitive and, in many cases, faster and more reliable. And to think that's it's free....
