Exceeding quota or full partition hangs system

    Hi.

Any advice on the following problem:

If I copy, either locally or with scp/sftp, multiple files so that the quota hardlimit is exceeded or partition is filled, the partition in question becomes completely unusable. The copy process hangs and can't be killed even from root account. If i copy just one file, there seems to be no problem, the copy process stops just fine as it's supposed to. But with multiple files the partition can't be accessed or used in any way, not even with root account. If I only try to cd to some directory in the partition in question, the shell hangs. As long as i don't access the hanged partition, system stays completely usable.

    I'm running SUSE Linux 9.2

It depends on the file system you are trying to do this with.

If it is /var, then you could have problems as there are system processes that are constantly writing to it.

You are pushing the boundaries with a full partition, you should avoid doing it if you want to have a stable system.
