Thread: Firefox Won't Start

    Firefox Won't Start

My firefox 1.06 & 1.07 will not start. The other day I added some extensions to it, about three of them, and every since, it won't start.

I'm using Ubuntu Hoary and when I type firefox in cli, I get this message:

Extension System Warning: Failed to set up default extensions files probably because you do not have write privileges to this location. While you can run Firefox like this, it is recommended that you run it at least once with privileges that allow it to generate these initial files to improve start performance. Running from a disk image on MacOS X is not recommended.

I see it listed when I type 'ps ax'

    15501 pts/3 Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin -a firefox

But it's not opening the browser. If I run it with sudo it will run. I've also tried changing permissions on my .mozilla/firefox folder without luck.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thnx.

Did you try running as root first then tying it as user?

Does it run under a different user account?

When I reinstalled it, I ran it as root first then user.

I haven't tried it with another account but will try it.

Try renaming ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla-old .. and then slowly add the extensions 1 by 1 and see which extension is causing the problem.

Firefox does run as a different user. Without the extensions added.

Shebang, I'll have to try it tomorrow when I get home. If it works, I'll leave those extensions alone.

    Thnx.

I renamed my .mozilla folder and ran firefox and now it's working. It seems that I can't add extensions this time, but I'm not going to worry about it.

All is fine at this point. Thnx for all the help.

Hrmm. You should be able to add extensions. What were the extensions ?

    Re:Firefox Won't Start

I can't install extensions or themes. The one I did install the first time around was Adblock, I forget what the others where.

Any suggestions on getting it working?

    Thnx.
