Make sure your workgroup name is the same for your entire LAN including caps in workgroup name.

    Re:windows XP cant see samba

    3.0.10-1ubuntu3

but this is weird I just tried it again and it works. when I go to My computer and put in "\\192.168.1.104\smb" it now goed to the directory.

the only thing that has changed was my dad not being in the room haha

also I have another Q but no samba related.

on another PC I got etherape running so I can see what is going on my network. but I noted that there is a subnet mask of "239.255.255.250" I dont have a PC that uses that they are are 255.255.255.0.

    thanks for your help Compunuts

Is your dad's IP address listed in /etc/hosts on your PC?

    Re:windows XP cant see samba

Several things could be wrong here.

    1. You need to shut off the "browser" service in XP, this will force XP to find the master browse list. If you have samba setup right XP will find the browse list elsewhere. (Oh and remember that it takes something like 4 min for windows to update its browse lists-- so after changing something wait a minute or two for an election)

    2. Turn on wins server in your samba config, point your XP machine towards it. (In tcp/ip properties) The wins server will keep a master browse list regardless of who is master browser. If you want a really slick way of using a wins server, set up and use a dhcp server on the samba machine-- in the config you can specify a wins that each client using dhcp will configure.

    3. In samba config force samba to be a master browser.

    4. Double make sure that samba is in the WORKGROUP workgroup, XP home defaults to MSHOME, make sure the xp machine is in the correct workgroup.

Thats all I can think of for right now.

    Have fun

Oh and your question about 239.255.255.250 (port 1900)--

Universal plug and play crap-- nothin to worry about.
