    NVIDIA driver installation issues

all right im not a complete newbie at this ive installed the driver plenty of times with no issues its just my new computer
the issue is primarily rivafb, is blocking me from installing the driver

now ive tried compiling my own kernels, and they wont boot, and ive used the config files countless times before, without any problem.
So im left with stock kernel

my distro is debian 3.1 sid from scratch, im currently using the vesa driver.
my card is an evga 6660 GT , my processor is an amd64 3000+.
i didnt know if having a 64 bit processor affects anything

my kernel is in the 2.6.8 range but ive installed every kernel debian made available.

so essentialy how do i disable riva fb and to install the kernel for nvidia i did this

    apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common

    module-assistant auto-install nvidia

at about 50% it says error from riva fb

    thanks in advance

Did you try just using a stock kernel and using the nVidia driver installer? On my system, it complains about riva fb but it never kills the driver install. Just an idea.

I meant the first one actually. When it comes to nVidia device drivers I usually prefer to use the ones provided by nVidia. What kind of error does it give you when you try installing the .run file?

No, I am not totally sure what it is talking about. There is some chatter in the user groups about it, but mostly it inconsequential. I get a message about that too, but I have never had even the smallest problem with it.
