    Mic problems

I bought a headset to use with skype (plantronics .Audio 20 if it matters), now the speaker works just fine, but the mic refuses to work - it's connected right and I've tried a replacement. Still doesn't record sound.

It's not just a problem in skype, infact any recording application I've tried fails to enjoy the wonders of my horrid voice. everything is unmuted and leveled in the gnome volume control application..

I saw a lot of people having the same issues on the skype forum for Linux, but no solution.. what's the matter?

    Is the computer home built?
If so, make sure that everything inside is connected correctly.

this is a homebuild one, but I just hook it up to my Soundblaster live!

when hooked up I can hear myself in the ear piece and I get feedback on volume settings in GNOME - so there's some degree of workiness, but it won't record for some reason.

I had kind of similar problems. To get skype working, I had to

    a) Get the statically linked release from the skype website
    b) Kill esd

With esd out of the way, I was able to get skype working when using the statically linked binary.

I also had trouble with recording software, but that was because I was using Gnome Recorder or whatever it is that ships with Gnome, and that's never worked properly. It's essentially a broken piece of crap.

    Lovechild,

Where is this "hidden" slider ? I've had the same problem with Skype for several months. I've fscked with every "shown" setting and slider, with the incoming fine, but no mic.

Debian / sarge (ProMEPIS actually) kernel 2.6.10

    TIA,

    Ken

    Re:Mic problems

okay my current working settings are:

    Headphone LFE: off
Microphone capture device on and unmuted

    You might need:

    Mic boost (+20dB): on

There's an excellent guide to debugging sound settings on the skype linux forums btw.
