I am looking at dropping some dough on a Sun SPARC Solaris box. I want one, but am unable to find on Google a good comparison. I can easily afford a SPARC IIi 233, but those are as comparable in horsepower as a k6-3 400Mhz from what I do recall. I am looking for more thouough of a CPU comparison. I wanna hit e-bay or something, but dont know what to pay, since I cannot put a value onto the product.
??? Any help ???
On the other hand, I have been mulling getting a Sun Java Desktop from them new. For $2000 I can get a sweet AMD64 Opteron 144 and 512MB RAM with 80GB SCSI-UW3. Not bad since I can slap Sol 10 on it afterwards (no rip on their linux, but come on -- Solaris 10 kicks ass on x86 these days)

You can't really compare the two. If it were, it would be comparing apple and oranges.
But if you are going to buy it, go for UltraSparc II or higher. If I could afford it, I would go for a brand new since the support for its 64 bit is much more stable than on x86 64 bits.

Well, I prefer barley ... well veggies, since they make better booze...
But anyhow, as to what you said Compunuts -- actually you can. I can compare my Commodore 64 to my AthlonXP. Mine is all around more powerful. However what I dont know is the different raw calculation benches on the SPARC and x86 chips. Ill even take a chart on AMD64 vs SPARC III or IV.
Close calls can be made, but there are areas that chips will vary on, and can be tested
Floating Point
Integer
SMP performance (scaling and such)
Effects of more cache
The list can go on.
x86 and Sparc were a big difference a few years ago but the gap is quickly closing. With Opteron and all those 64 chips from commondity chip makers like Intel and AMD, even IBM and Motorolla are giving in. It just makes no sense to develop a whole new chip arch if the current technologies and give what we needed. Solaris and Irix are much more stable on 64 bit platform but give it a few more years, it will be eliminated. Until then, I'm all for Sparc if I could afford it.
