    user management programmatically

What should I be looking at for creating users and changing passwords via a script? Would my best bet be looking at the source for passwd and smbpasswd and making custom versions of those to call from a script? If I have to write soemthing from scratch, I'd rather do it in php or perl or bash, but I can modify someone elses C/C++ sorta...

Look at the patterns in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, just count the ":" and you should be home free.
