A speed bump would quite nice if it's there in 2.10. With that said, I think Gnome is not as bad as a resource hog as it's reputation suggests.
E.g., I am running Gnome 2.9 on a 233MHz G3 w/ 288MB RAM. And although it's not a speed demon, I can still get a lot done using Gnome. It doesn't seem unresponsive or bloated or slow... But that could be because I yanked out Jaguar to install Ubuntu. Hmmm.
