By the way. Hotplug does not seem to be running anymore. How can one start that "service"?
Thanks!

Yes, I do have a messages log.
Please see below for output when inserting the usbdisk:
Jan 27 00:43:10 hubbabubba kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
gnome-volume-manager outputs:
libhal.c 911 : Error sending msg: No property info.capabilities on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_usb_device_402_5621_109_-1_noserial_0
I guess the above look ok but I still have no trace of my disk in either /media or /dev
Thinking of reinstalling from scratch with the usbdrive plugged in. Might that be an answer?
Any other ideas are most welcome!

You can start it by typing "/etc/init.d/hotplug restart", but I'm pretty sure it is still running. It just doesn't show up as a process.
Hmm,
I tried that but received the below. I also checked for updates with apt-get but seem to have the latest version installed:
[root@hubbabubba ~]# /etc/init.d/hotplug restart
-bash: /etc/init.d/hotplug: No such file or directory
[root@hubbabubba ~]# apt-get install hotplug

hotplug is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not upgraded.
Thanks again!
