    GLIB - Fedora - I'manewbie

OK -- I'm a newbie. I've done a search on this thing, and I'm not sure where to go for answers anymore.

I installed Fedora today (after several failed attempts at installing FreeBSD). It was so cool -- it came up and ran with few problems. But, I installed the standard desktop. Is there a way to re-install without losing all the stuff I've set up (like my mail, etc.)?

The specific problem I'm encountering is as follows:
The XMMS distributed with Fedora does not play MP3s. I have a bunch of legal MP3s from my ms days. I downloaded XMMS from XMMS.org so I could play MP3s. I then had to "yum install gcc", but now I get an error regarding glib-config (specifically -
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
    *** full path to glib-config.
configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***.

I tried running "yum install glib" and was told that I already have the latest and greatest -- "glib is installed and is the latest version."

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Sanctuary much! I found the answer (at least to the MP3 problems) at Fedora 3 Tips and Tricks. There is a lot more information out there to peruse.

For cool audio stuff for Fedora/Red Hat, you might also try Planet CCRMA:

They have a lot of really neat audio/video stuff for Linux, and a definite procedure to get you from here to there almost painlessly (you'll want broadband, though).

    Later On,
