I think the second one is closer to what I have experienced. I might give that a shot. Thanks!
Per our conversation I did some pondering. I decided that the good ole' FC mail list would be a good start. Here are a few solutions that may be of some help.

I think I figured it out! Ok Suse, FC2, and Ubuntu Warty use kernel 2.4. So does slack if you select 2.4 on install. That has to be it. Can't wait to try it out!!!
Finally my dilema is close to being solved. Possibly even solved.
Finally I have figured it out!!!!
So far it looks like if I have kernel older than 2.6.8 then the nvidia driver will freeze my box. I am using nvidia driver 1.0-6111. So far that combination works. 1.0-6111 won't compile on newer kernels. I will now try never nvidia drivers. Finally know what going on!!! What relief. I've been to hell and back. Running FC3 w/ official nvidia driver. ;D No more dealing with flaky nv driver.

Doesn't ubuntu use the 2.6 kernel?

Yes it does. So does FC2. However I believe they're both older than 2.6.8.
It might just be the nvidia version. Newest nvidia drivers on 2.6.8 don't work. Need to try nvidia 1.6111 on newest kernel. Right now everything working like a charm. ;D
The line of 7xxx drivers suck ass. Use the latest 6xxx one. nVForums has many a threads on why and what issues can arise. Mostly performance related, however.
i am having very good luck 1.711 with kernel 2.6.11
Games get a huge drop in speed and all around performance. Hit up www.transgaming.org for more info still. Not to mention the assloads of bugs that are being claimed to be corrected and those that are ignored (framebuffer for one).
