Slackware 10: Installing a program

Hi,
Newly installed Slackware 10. Have numerous questions like the
previous post. I have others:

One of the things that always confuses me is where to put a new
program so that it works. I guess it should be in your path somewhere,
but where is that? And how do you add another subdirectory to the
path. The books I have don't seem to answer the questions I have.

I am also trying to dual boot with XP and Slackware 10 comes with
LILO bootloader. I have tried to configure it, but I get all sorts of error
messages regarding the /dev/hdb2 filesystem has errors in it. Duplicate/
Bad blocks in 1 node and there is a whole screen full of the Duplicates
or bad blocks. I don't know what that means or what to do about it.
I am trying to install the LILO bootloader in the MBR, but Slack says
that is a dangerous thing to do, but their solution of putting it in the
first sector of the Linux partition doesn't sound like it will dual boot like
I want it too.

What applications are you trying to install? are you building them from source? A good slackware resource is linuxpackages.org, where you can find current .tgz files. Onceyou have the package, get a root terminal, and use
installpkg <package filename>
alternatively, you can use
pkgtool
to get a curses-based tool to view, add, and remove packages.

The MBR should be fine for LILO. Versions of windows after win2k came out are selfish aobut the MBR, though. Be sure to make the rescue floppies.
