    Internet Connect Slows Down suddenly!!

    For the past few days - I've got really slow connections. I'm downloading at 6 KB/s. I have DSL (384 KB/s). I used to get 170 KB/s. I don't know why it's happening. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I have a wired network. One is Windows XP, the other one is my Linux Comp. If it matters, I'm running Slackware 10.0. Is it my cable (that's connected to my router ? ). Is it my network card? And, one of the times, i saw that there are three dhcp clients according to my router setup. However, there are /only/ two comps that are sharing the connection. ???

    Thanks!

    Shebang.

    The first thing I would want to know, are what sites are you DL'ing from, and get the average. If it's consistantly bad accross the board, then suspect your Provider, PC, LAN - in that general order. If not, then maybe it's the remote side?? I bet you thought of that, but it helps to get the thinking going, no?

    First thing I'd try is cycling the power on the router. That's by far the most common cause of internet problems for me. Either routers are extremely difficult to make, or router makers collectively don't give half a crap about putting out a quality product. I've never had a really good router...ever.

    If cycling the router doesn't work, try unplugging your router and plugging your dsl modem straight into each box and see if the speeds increases. If not, it's probably your provider and you should give them a call.

    Yeah. I tried plugging the modem into directly the Linux box. The speed increased but not by a lot. I tried recycling the router a /lot/ for the past one week.

    @Radar,
    I was kernel.org (w00t), sf.net/projects/icewm, openoffice.org
    What happens is that the immediate speed is 500 KB/s - then it drops to 32.2 KB/s. Then it drops to 9.3 KB/s. I ran a speed test SBC Yahoo! DSL site and the result:

    MP3 2.5MB

    DSL -> 6 Min. 44 Seconds

    Dial-UP -> 9 Min..

    That's the problem. Also, would there be anythign wrong with the DSL Modem ?

    BTW, Thanks guys for the immediate replies. I really appreciate it.

    [Edit]

    I forgot to say - after it gets to its lowest speed, which is < 50 most of the time - after a couple of seconds - it just freezes. Nothing happens. Then I ^C and start again and then same thing happens. After about 10-15 Tries, it actually works right.

    I had the same problem. Call your ISP and ask them to do a line test.

    May have fried a filter. I had a client that had some odd cable issues (Time Warner RoadRunner). The problem -- a fried filter. Was half filtering the data frequencies, when it should have been only filtering cable tv.

    Definitely call a tech to take a look.

    I have a ton of dsl filters laying around. Let me know if you need one.
    Have you tried a different box or different OS and downloading from the same site?
