cat5

Stands for Catagory 5 cable.

udp

Isn't it UTP? UnTwisted Pair.

type cm

This is the cable type ( CM ). This kind of cables are 4 conductors and they are used for 300V maximum and 75 degree C operating limits. C stands for Carrier-circuit application and M stands for Mid-span type installations.

Isn't it 24 AWG? This is the guage specification. The wire is 24 guage in specific to American Wire Guage specification.

So if they hasn't mentioned anywhere being cross-over cable, it's highly likely that it's only patch cables. Some will say it's patch and some won't. But most of the crossover cables I've seen have marking for it.

Come and find out I just had to assign the correct IO address and IRQ with good old modprobe.

For the reference for the future people who might encounter the same old problem, can you tell what you did and what command you issued? For example, is it "modprobe irq=10 io=0x330" ? If you have searched google with "etherlink red hat", it might come up the link where they laid out irq and io clearly. But I didn't have time to search for you.

Here's the command I used to install a module for a 3COM ETHERLINK 3 in ISA mode:
modprobe 3c509 irq=5 io=0x220
(IRQ & IO were reported to me by ifconfig)

Well, this was the link I was talking about but this one is for Red Hat 6.2 although it seems still relevence when the kind of hardware is in question. I found the link back when I was cleaning my old P133 Red Hat 6.2 box to give it away. ;D
