    Music server progress report

Hello all, you may remember me as Bullgooseloony, or Creedon, well I'm bullgoose now. When I used to spend a lot of time here, one of my projects was a dedicated music server for my CD (700+) collection, well it's up and running finally. I'm using Libranet 2.8.1 with the stock kernel 2.4.21 re-compiled to support SMP (my server is a dual Pentium II 333Mhz w/512 Mb of PC-133 RAM); I've decided to use Ogg Vorbis to encode the files, the server is setup on my LAN, along with my desktop and my laptop; my next project is wireless networking; it will be a lot easier to run my network if it's wireless, because I live in an old house; running CAT5 cables in a hundred+ year-old house is not something I want to do; wireless is for old lazy guys like me. After struggling through all the configuration crap, setting up the server was actually pretty easy, I just had to figure out what I needed, Linux provided the rest.

Nice! I have a similar setup. 20 gigs of MP3s (I'd use ogg, but my hardware mp3 player hates it so that's out) being served from a central location. Wireless is a good thing too. Every speaker in my house is attached to a computer running headless (without monitor). Every time I want to switch up a song, just ssh into it and change whatever's playing from my laptop! Linux is brilliant this way.

Wireless networking is easy. I just done it for a friend of mine. The hard part is tring to secure it. In the process, I intentionally hacked into a few networks around his house ( or is that intentional? )

    I think it's accidental

Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks for the assurance.

Man, you would be surprised how many open networks are around us. I mean, hack, if not for running my own servers, and ethical reasons, I would not even need to pay for Net access. They are everywhere. The weakest link I found was a 1MB link. I mean, that's still a lot faster than 56K.
