    Sound suddenly became borked

Back again with another perplexing problem.
Running FC2 on a LinuxCertified laptop

I had sound for several months, then all of a sudden lost sound in everything. All apps as well as MP3, Ogg, CDs, everything.

I tried several times system-config-soundcard. I get the following:
    Code:
    Device detected
    Vendor: Intel 82801DB (ICH4) AC97 Audio Contoller
    Module: snd-intel8x0
    Play test sound ? Yes
    Did you hear anything? NO
Automatic detection of the sound card did not work. Audio will not be available on the system. Please click OK to continue.
In google'ing around I found lots of posts of lost sound in FC2, and followed several advices to re-install / edit alsamixer which didn't help.

I found lots of cases where install / upgrade of NVidea drivers borked the sound, but I didn't change NVidea drivers or even try.

I'd be most appreciative if someone passed a magic bullet or advice as to what to try or do to get bafck my sound (short of waiting for FC3 final)

    Thanks in advance.

    Re:Sound suddenly became borked

    Hello, Paul,

I've included below only the (seemingly) sound related entries, but nothing slaps me in the face as particularly relevant.

    Code:
    Oct 10 04:02:09 localhost syslogd 1.4.1: restart.
Oct 10 04:06:53 localhost su(pam_unix)[13839]: session opened for user news by (uid=0)
Oct 10 04:06:54 localhost su(pam_unix)[13839]: session closed for user news
Oct 10 09:39:57 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
(This FATAL is repeated 9 times)
    then:
    Code:
Oct 11 00:18:59 localhost su(pam_unix)[22165]: session opened for user root by ken(uid=500)
Oct 11 00:21:48 localhost su(pam_unix)[22165]: session closed for user root
    Oct 11 00:25:43 localhost gconfd (ken-3270): file gerror.c: line 225 (g_propagate_error): assertion `src != NULL' failed
Oct 11 00:25:43 localhost last message repeated 14 times
Oct 11 01:11:23 localhost kernel: application ymessenger.bin uses obsolete OSS audio interface
    Oct 11 01:11:23 localhost udev[22451]: creating device node '/udev/audio'
    Oct 11 01:11:23 localhost udev[22452]: creating device node '/udev/adsp'
    Oct 11 01:11:23 localhost udev[22450]: creating device node '/udev/dsp'
The following is repeated throughout messages, messages.1 and messages.2
    Code:
Oct 8 21:52:56 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
Oct 8 22:34:59 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
Oct 8 23:04:34 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
Oct 9 00:00:49 localhost last message repeated 2 times
Oct 9 00:04:51 localhost last message repeated 4 times
Oct 9 01:01:42 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
But provided (me) with no cloobies.

Does it help anyone else to shine a light on this?

hmmmm, /sbin/depmod -a returns to bash prompt (no errors) but sound detection is same as in original post ('nuffin) :'( ???

Just to get you thinking along these lines, I had an SBLive that I was running under FC1 a long time ago that just stopped working one day. I popped it out and threw it into another box and still nothing. Only solution was to buy a new sound card. Don't discount the possibility that the hardware may have killed itself.

    Good clue, Tyr_7BE

I went over to the dual boot winbloat ExPee (that is only used for an errant scanner that used to work on Linux, on my wife's box, but now doesn't) and the sound is dead there as well :'( This dual boot is the only copy of anything M$ in the house.

I guess my next step is to get this laptop, which is my daily workhorse, while a desk top box sits idle, to San Jose for a fix.

Thanks for the idea, it was a good one, that I had totally discounted as the laptop is only a few months old.
