    GL not working ati 7000

    Hey Gang,

I'm having a hard time getting my new Radeon 7000 64 mb ram card to do GL screen savers and the like.

The only thing suspcious to me in the XFree86 log was the following line near the bottom:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

modprobed "nvidia" and have checked to see that it's installed, and it is. I don't know if this is the nvidia x driver, though I think that it is. I've restarted X, and still no GL.

Any ideas? Here's my XF86config-4 file.

Radeon is made by ATI, so Nvidia drivers will not work. You probably want to try `modprobe radeon` (It may be something else).

Yes, which is why I was surprised to see this error message in the log:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

Is it asking for the NVIDIA driver, or have I specified (somewhere in my XFConfig-4?) to use nvidia instead of radeon?

I'll try to load the mod you suggest, and see what happens.

    Thanks!

Your distro might have included the NVidia driver at install. NVidia installs it own version of libgl, so you're pretty much screwed if you're not using the nvidia driver. A quick solution around this is to install mesa3D (http://www.mesa3d.org/) or reinstall XFree86. Depending on your OS and bandwidth reinstall X might be easier.

    Good luck.

Thanks gang. I'll try these. I'm running Debian Sarge, but installed it while my old card was still working. I did run the xfconfig app that walks you through the configuration (after I installed the new card), but perhaps there were still elements of the previous config in there.

What would be the best way to uninstall and then reinstall X? SHould I do it by hand, or use something like aptitude?

Thanks again for all the help. I tried banging on this one for a while before I posted, but was coming up dry. Man, I love the linux community.

If you are going to re-install the X Window System, I suggest that you use X.org instead of XFree86. On Slackware, to install a new version X.org, all I had to do was download the source, move/rename /usr/X11R6, and execute `make World` && `make install`.

I would suggest using synaptic. It's the front end for APT. "apt-get install synaptic" would do.

    Re:GL not working ati 7000

After more reading, I found out that the ATI site only has the drivers for their more advanced cards. This card, despite having 64 mb of memory isn't high-end by any means (little did I know). But, for $26, I'll be happy to get it working as well as it was intended.

Anyway, the way to get GL going is to use DRI. I've tried the steps outlined in the DRI Wiki, but am having errors. I'll double check their lists to see if anyone else has had the smae troubles I've had.

Basically, I checked out the cvs sources and tried to build them. Here's the link to the DRI wiki. I'll paste in the log file of my build attempt. I really don't understand much about what's going on. I was just being a careful monkey, and trying to follow all the steps as accurately as I could.

    http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/Building

The logfile is pretty big, but here are a bunch of the errors (the last lines of it). I don't know if this will mean anything to any of you. I'll try to find google-able sections and see what I can come up with. I never build stuff from source, so my bet is that my system isn't ready to build the stuff I checked out. But again, my knowledge of this stuff is horribly limited.

Thanks again for all your help.

    Re:GL not working ati 7000

Well, I tried installing the libX-dev libraries, and that got me much farther (way less errors), but it's still failing in teh end. Anyone have any other ideas?

    THanks,

    M
