    Need Utility Program

Is there an utility program to monitor your internet traffic that normally sits in tray? I currently using Debian with Gnome and do have KDE installed also.

    Thnx.

Firestarter (http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/) - Sorta monitors traffic.

There's also Network Monitor GNOME Applet. Should be in your pannel utility thing, if you're running one of the newer GNOME versions, I think 2.6.0 and higher.

Is the network monitor similar to the one that windows uses? Similar to the dialup modem monitor, where the lights blink when net activity is active. Looks like a computer icon.

    Thnx.

I use iptraf, but that runs in a terminal.

Yes, two monitor shaped pixmaps. The applet sits on your panel and flashes whenever there is any activity on the specified device (EG: eth0, ppp0, lo, etc.).

Yes that's it. So you say it's called Network Monitor, well I can't seem to find it on Gnome 2.6. Does anybody know what the command to apt-get it? I've tried netmon and different variants but still no go.

    Thnx.

`Network Monitor 2.*.*', is the actual name written by SUN Microsystems.

It's been awhile since I used GNOME 2.6.* but it should be a stock applet. Try apt-getting `gnome-netstatus-applet', that maybe the applet if I'm not wrong. :-\

    Re:Need Utility Program

actually I've used both Gnome 2.6 and 2.8 and in both cases the network applet wasn't installed by default. I never did get around to finding it, as I use the system monitor instead. Try adding a System Monitor (I think that's what it's called) to the panel, and right-click and go to preferences. Tell it to display network info as well and you get a little graph that displays network activity for the last few seconds.

    Re:Need Utility Program

Ok I found it when I went to Add to Panel. It's was listed as Network Monitor. And there is another one called NetMon and it's more text based looking.

I did install gnome-netstatus-applet, so I don't know what exactly it added, and I don't know if I had network monitor installed all the time.

    Thnx for the help.
