    cd to the directory where you have the tar.gz
    what does this mean..........please i am going nuts ........trying to install tar and nothing happens in my root shell........help would be apreaciated ;D

    It means open the directory where you saved the file.
    CD stands for Change Directory.

    Yeah. What countach44 said is true.

    so if you have a directory named foo

    Code:
    # cd foo
    #
    That will switch the directory to foo.

    If you're not too familiar with the Shell (Command Line Interface), I would suggest using a File Manager such as Konqueror or Nautilus. '
