    Informational - artsmessage

I installed the complete KDE 3.2.3 onto my Slackware 10 setup. I am using alsa to configure my sound chip. Everything appears to be going okay until I startx. Then I get the following message:

    Informational - artsmessage
    Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
What the heck is going on here? Any thoughts? Every google session comes up with a bunch of possibilities. Unfortunately, none of the suggestions have worked. I'm willing to give anything a try in order to have sound. Thanks.

    Cheers

I guess check the basics first. Do you have a /dev/desp ? can you cat a wav file to it and see if it works?
