Actually alter the Device section to look like this

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    Driver "vesa"
    # VendorName "Videocard vendor"
    # BoardName "SiS 650"
    EndSection

If you're just web browsing, text editing etc, you should be fine. Sounds like it was using the wrong driver, what does lspci show you?

    Re:bottom of screen missing

    lspci gives:

    Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 65x/M650/740 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter
edit, just noticed this at the top

    Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 740 Host (rev 01)
It seems odd that it worked fine on the lcd display if it was using the wrong driver.

You're right that does seem odd. Maybe its a corrupt driver file. Who knows.
