    forgot my password

    one of my OS' is red hat ....the run level is 5...when the dialog boxes 4 the user name and the passwd popped up...i logged in as the root ....but when i tried getting into /etc/inittab ...i was denied permission to do so......what do i do????......i've just begun working on linux....
    shud i reinstall

    to restore a password for root, you can pass the parameter linux 1 to the end of the command to load linux in grub or lilo (whatever you use to boot).

    that is the single user mode, and wont ask for a login. just type "passwd" and you can retype in a password. For regular users, it would be "passwd username".
