is the cable bad? getting that many errors is not a good thing.
When I do ipconfig it shows hw address and IP address correctly, but I acnnot ping anything (cable checked and it is fine)
ifconfig displays RX packets 499922 errors, TX packets 70 errors.
Is that something to be worried about? What are those by the way.?
Thanks.

see above...cable is 100% good
Pardon me but .... How do you know Cable is 100% good? Physical condition of cable may seems good but the internal may have defects. Also, it can be cause by noise or electromagnetic fields such as cable being too close to electrical wiring/outlets and stuff.
If you have extra box and cable, bring it to one physical location and try it there. If errors still exists, then it may be a bad NIC/badly configured NIC. I have one NIC that works great with Windows but won't work at all with anything NIX no matter what I do. It's Intel etherexpress by its chipsets but it just won't work.
I also had one experience where I can ping the NIC itself and others but when data transfer reach to certain level, the chip quit working and errors it out.
