Does freenode have SSL support? (My connection goes through my parents box, and Dad knows how to use Ethereal)

    Re:IRC channel

I second the move to freenode, I've only visited #ljr once and that was mainly out of boredom. However I chat mostly on freenode, and I'd be happy to iddle on #ljr once and awhile.

As for the 'power' think I'd say have phbharris, or whomever owns/sponsors LJR.org, be the 0wn3r, problem solved.

It would be fine for someone like pbharris to own it, but remember, he's a busy man. I can't remember the last time I saw him on IRC. Oh yeah, when we were on Open Projects. :P

Not sure if Freenode offers SSL. Does OFTC?

I don't know about either, but I know LEHnet does, and I try to limit all my conversations to that *shrugs*

are your internet habits really so important or are you just being paranoid?

Why should anyone give a fuck what you are doing on the net?

Because that person is your dad, and you don't want him seeing your pr0n or your personal conversations?

    That's just silly.

Why would his dad monitor his conversations and decifre them from ethereal output..

He should respect his right to a private conversation in any regard, and to be frank, I never understood why people are so embarassed about watching porn - it's a perfectly natural thing to do.

    Re:IRC channel

I like my privacy, but parents view it this way "It's our house, our internet connection, therefore we should be able to see exactly what you're doing". I am lucky to have a computer in my room, and them having ethereal on his box was one of the stipulations. I prefer my conversations to be kept private, unless I decide to disclose them. There are some things you just don't want your father stumbling upon.

You may have the luxory of parents who respect your privacy willingly, but I don't.

Ok, then tell me why we need to move? if we dont want SSL, and there is no REAL reason to go somewhere with IPv6, when not very many of us have it, and IPv4 works just fine, lets just stay where we are.

but otherwise, this is a community driven site.. so wouldn't it make sense to have an irc server on a net ran by a couple members of the community?

I didn't say we didn't want SSL, I said I thought the reason he wanted SSL was silly - SSL is cool from a geek point of view fx. I was however unable to figure out if FreeNode supports SSL on their servers, nor if OFTC does - it isn't stated clearly on their site at least. It wouldn't surprise me if it did support it though, they seem to be on top of things tchnologywise.

Anyways, if you really truly need to keep something private you may want to look into a protocol called slic, it's like IRC but everything can be signed and it's secure enough for even the most paranoid of you.

Anyways, I'm begining to get the feeling that this argument is more about me owning the channel than the technical and social merits of going to FreeNode and changing the name.
