As long as you can set the laptop to boot from it, I don't see why not..
Or make a floppy disk with lilo on it, and use that?
Lets just say that hypothetically, I wanted to remove the harddrive from a laptop and use a usb external drive as the primary. As long as the bios detects the usb device prior to hitting the MBR, it should work. Any thoughts or ideas?

Check the redhat mailing list, but I believe that there was success around Redhat 9. There was IIRC, about 5 people that were very active and contributing members that wanted to make that work. I do not recall at the moment their success/failure stories, but that is where you can look.
