Should be just fine. If you're going to be using X, make sure and stick with something lightweight, definitely -not- KDE, possibly GNOME, but for optimal performance go for some kind of window manager.
is this system too slow to run debian
p2 233 mhz with 256 mb of ram.
whats your XPerience?capybara

Here's my PC running Slackware 9.1:
Pentium II
199 MhZ
128 MB Ram
It runs awesome.. I haven't tried KDE or Gnome but Blackbox && IceWM run great and fast. Get Aterm and it is really awesome.. I've run Debian on this box too.. (unstable).. It is awesome...
I installed Debian Sid on an IBM Thinkpad 233mhz with 96mb of ram, and Gnome desktop, but I switched to Fluxbox. Using Gnome, it's kinda slow, but no slower then the same machine using Win 98.
I have P 233 ( Not PII, normal P I ) with 128 MB of RAM. It runs great with IceWM on it. I run Debian testing. This box is a webserver, SSH server, FTP server, gateway/firewall with about 7 users on it. I do not run any VNC stuff so pure SSH tunnel with Lynx works great without any hipcups. Your box should have no problem.
Like others have said, you should go for a lightweight WMs ( Window managers ) such as Fluxbox/blackbox and IceWM rather than full-blown resource intensive WMs like Gnome or KDE. They will run without any problems but the starting up would rather be slower than using IceWM.
