    gentoo etc-update

hey guys I jsut wanted to know what option sould I choose and how safe would it be to overwire these files. would I have to edit fstab and /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 again, here the files it wants to update

    Code:
The following is the list of files which need updating, each
configuration file is followed by a list of possible replacement files.
    1) /etc/fstab
    /etc/._cfg0000_fstab
    2) /etc/gentoo-release
    /etc/._cfg0000_gentoo-release
    3) /etc/group
    /etc/._cfg0000_group
    4) /etc/rc.conf
    /etc/._cfg0000_rc.conf
    5) /etc/conf.d/net
    /etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_net
    6) /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
    /etc/modules.autoload.d/._cfg0000_kernel-2.4
Please select a file to edit by entering the corresponding number.
(-1 to exit) (-3 to auto merge all remaining files)
(-5 to auto-merge AND not use 'mv -i'):
    TIA
    Michael

    Re:gentoo etc-update

etc-update always kicked my butt until I recently decided to read up on it and actually learn how to use it.

I would go one by one and choose whether you want to keep or replace the file. eg.

press 1, it should you the difference between /etc/fstab and /etc/._cfg0000_fstab, you will probably want to keep the fstab you have now so choose to keep original.

press 2, show you the diff for the /etc/gentoo-release....

and so on til you either keep or replace all 6. You generally don't want to replace any files that you have made significant changes to but something like gentoo_release you can update with no problem. I would keep numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and replace 2.

I have learned not to use the -3 or -5 options because they have only brought me pain.
Also you might want to check out dispatch-conf.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah that was my problem too, always thought it was stupid that you could either merge them or not...turns out that I was the one that was stupid.
