I have a book called C++ the complete reference, this big fat thing done by Herbert Schildt, through Osborne publishers.....When I did C/C++ programming, this was my bible that I slept with at night and cherished...it knows and sees all!

I'm starting to read Unix Network Programming, and I think it will be a good idea to get a book on C. I figure it's best to have a C book to reference and read while I go through it, rather then just a C++ book that I've read.
Anyone have any recommendations? I don't really need a book that explains the basics of programming, so much as a reference book that has good examples. I was actually thinking about getting The C Programming Language by Brian Kernighan. All the reviews seem to calll it a bible, and I think i can't go wrong if it's written by Kernighan. From what I understand it's a good book to learn and reference from. I'd like to hear some opinions though.
Thank you.

If you give a man a fire he'll be warm, if you light the man on fire he'll be warm for life.
C How to program by Deital & Deital or the one by Kerrnihan and Ritchie are the 2 used by most colleges.
I would go with the one by Ritchie since he wrote the language.

Yah, might be a good idea......I would go with the one by Ritchie since he wrote the language.

The C Programming Language is the one by Kernighan and Ritchie. I'm pretty much decided on getting it now... I might pick up The Complete C Reference, if the book doesn't suffice for a reference, but I assume it will be fine.
Thanks for the advice.![]()
i am taking a C programing course at my university. the book that we are using is called "C programing for engineers", but the author escapes my mind right now. but the professor thought highly of the book so maybe that is a good choice :P
i prefer The C Programming Language by Brian Kernighan. This is a good book for beginners.
Its a great book!Originally Posted by surendran
