Thread: Do people want to work or what?

Do people want to work or what?

Ok, just a quick rant here...

So, everyone in IT is out of work, there are no jobs, blah, blah, blah. This may very well be true, but man, I just don't think anyone knows how to properly apply for a job anymore.

For example, I just posted an opening in the NY Times for a winblows help desk person. I specifically asked for a resume, cover letter or letter of interest and three references. I have so far received about 100+ resumes, and do you know how many of them have cover letters, letters of interest, or references? About 10!

What the hell is wrong with everyone? Are cover letters no longer “in-vogue?” Does anyone really even read the job description to the position they are applying for?
If I get another resume from an AS 400 administrator I am going to puke! For Christ sakes, I had a CCIE apply for this job. And he was one of the only ones with a cover letter.

The job market sucks right now, but so does the applicant pool.

Sorry, I just had to rant because tomorrow I have to wade my way through this pile of puke.

By the way, anyone want a job?

Well at least out of those 100+, it's been narrowed down to 10 to keep and toss the others, for not following directions. If they can't apply from directions, you wouldn't want them on the job.

    Tolstoy,

i completely agree with saptech. If people cant follow simple instrustions like a cover letter and refrences they you automaticly throw their resume away because that is an indication on how they will work.

keep in mind there are alot of people out there that went to school for computers and passed tests but never really touched a computer.

    good luck in the search!

Same here except, I live in CA.

I used to work for a large computer MFG company as Purchasing Agent or Buyer. I do not pocess a degree but I worked my way up. So the boss wanted a few of us ( three in total; only one is graduate of UC Berkeley ) to screen resumes and interview all the applicants that are MBAs ( one of the requirement for that position was at least a graduate with some experience since it's not internal promotions like us ). I had to wonder how they ever get graduated from those Universities. :

tolstoy: Yes, many people don't know how to apply for a job, but I think some companies ought to learn how to do job postings. I graduated in December and I'm still looking for a job. Here are some of my pet peeves about job postings:

    - "Don't call us": I would like to know if my resume and letter got through all right, plus it shows interest in the job if I call. Why can't I?

    - "We want someone who is good with all these technologies: [dozens of technologies]": usually, if you apply for such a job and you don't know all those, they don't bother. Don't they know that we have this ability called "learning"?

    - This one happened once, but it pissed me off the most. I haven't had a callback in 2 months, and it's very depressing. Yesterday, some company calls back about a job (they announced a computer technician), but it turns out it was to do promotional work ("Hi, do you know our company?&quot. It pissed me off. I politely declined the offer, but I doubt they'll ever call again.

Another thing that's annoying is that I have only one year of experience in the IT field (something quite good for a recently graduated student), but most offers ask for 3 to 5 years of experience What happened to giving graduates their chance? I mean, I was in interview for a tutoring job. It was $10 (canadian) per hour and for a duration of 30 weeks. I figured that I'd probably get that given my experience and the fact that no adult with a home and a car would settle for $10/hr. It turns out the guy they hired had 7 years of experience in tutoring!

the reson why people dont want phone calls is because every person that sent a resume is going to make a phone call, thats HUNDREDS of phone calls that day.

Tolstoy how many resumes did you get for that one job posting? Over a hundered? Would you want that many phone calls?

Why should they teach you how to work in all these technologies when they could hire someone who ALREADY knows the stuff and they dont need to train them?? Makes good busniess sence.......

There are LOTS of entry level jobs out there.......

There are litterally hunderes of applicants for one positition, so they are going to pick and choose the best person. The job market sucks so bad right now people are taking what ever job they could get.

I know, i was in that boat last month, i took a job way below my skill level just because it was a job, i'm also making almost 10 grand less than i was........

Dude your jumping to alot of conclusions there, aren't you? What makes you think that these people, who have a hard time following directions, will actually bother phoning in?

I've been out of a job for a few months now, never had a decent job to tell the truth. From my experience, I can tell you that in general the HR people know jack shit about technology. Alot of the help wanted adverts have alot buzzwords and bs requirements, that are just insane for entry level positions.

By the way bob, you may wanna go back check spell your last post.
