    Planned server move

    Here we go again ...

I'm planning to host this site myself through a cable modem w/ a static IP. I'm setting up a box for it right now. It should be plenty fast, Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB, ATA100, etc.
This move will save me the hosting fee and will give me complete control over the site.

It should happen over the weekend. Expect up to a 24 hour outage while the DNS change propagates. I'll keep you up to date.

i'm worried about possible bandwith problems... what happened to hosting fee donation thingie that was once active on this site?

i'm sure some people here are willing to chip in for bandwith costs

No, it's really not about donations. I have some very-very low traffic websites that I need to host anyway. This way all my sites will be on the same box. I won't cancel the phpwebhosting account for a week after the move. If we experience speed issues (I highly doubt it) I'll move the site back.

Have not seen the speed issue yet but I'm usually kind of off hours surfer anyway....

Is your cable on 256 up? How much did they charge you for static IP?

Haven't made the move yet, still tweaking the email server on the new box.
The cable is 3Mbs down, 378k up. The static IP costs $20 bucks more than the dynamic.
    I'm using RoadRunner business class.

    Re:Planned server move

I have initiated the DNS change to the new server. It should take 24-48 hours.

I have set up the new server so that it will be using the database on the phpwebhosting server until the DNS change takes full effect. Then I will switch over to the new server's database. This way we'll have the least interruption. However, the new server might be less responsive in this transitional period since it has to go out and pull data through the Internet. That will improve once the server starts using it's own database (sometime on Friday).

Do you know when will the site be unavailable?

Sometime on Friday, but only for a few minutes, while I'm moving the database from the old server to the new one.

So in theory, we won't notice anything, except on friday?
