GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB "Whats Going on?"

Everything was working fine. I have XPand redhat9 on the same HDD and the dual boot was working fine.

IO added a second HDD and now instead of grub loading giving me the choice of which OS to boot, it just keeps saying GRUB GRUB GRUB over and over again, i cannot type anything.

I chacked and yes the new HDD is set to slave.

Maybe when you added a new hdd you changed something that grub doesn't expect to be changed? For example, in my /boot/grub/menu.lst I have an option "splashimage = (hd0,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz"...if it were me I'd try changing that to (hd1,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz. You'll need a boot disk and a way to access the shell though.

If that kind of stuff don't work, do you have the original rh9 cd? I know with Fedora Core 1 it gives you the option to repair the bootloader when you pop in the cd and reboot. Mayve give that a try?

considering no order was changed i would try what Tyr_7BE suggested - you can also try running install from the grub prompt, iir this give more information rather than install anything. i went through this a while back.

Now it doesnt load XP, when i select in grub it doesnt go to windows it just does nothing and the time goes back to 20 seconds.

How do i format just the windwos partition, and the reinstall it without getting rid of linux?

I looked at the grub code and i cant see anything wrong with grub.conf

Any help would be much apreciated.

you mean make windows xp bootable again? using ms windows fdisk run fdisk /mbr

Boot to your Windows cd and reinstall Windows. Make sure you erase only your Windows partition ant any of the other ones.

HOWEVER,

I think you don't need to reinstall Windows. Get a DOS bootdisk from http://bootdisk.com , and boot to DOS. once there, do

FDISK /MBR

that should reinstall the Windows bootloader and remove grub.

Afterwards, boot to your Fedora cd and follow PBHarris' advise.

I used the boot disk to boot to the command line.

I tried to do a fdisk /mbr

it gave me the answer

INVALID MEDIA TYPE READING DRIVE C
ABORT, RETRY, FAIL?

I tried to do dir

This gave the same answer. A dir for the second drive gave me a list of what was in the drive. Therefore there must be some error with the windows install on the first drive.

Any help ???

The only problem i have is that grub doesnt work. I think i can boot into windows but i cannot check until i can either delete grub or fix it.

Is there any way of taking away grub, and then reinstalling it again.

Would it work if i just delete the /boot partition

Or would this hurt my linux installation
