mp3's on corporate and school storage servers
Hi,
I haven't been keeping up with the whole mp3 copy right infringment issue.
What I'd like to know is suppose some users have some of thier mp3's stored on a file server in a cooporate or public school environment on their own private disk space. They give access to other users on the LAN. Is this deemed file sharing? I guess it doesn't have to be coorporate or public school. The intent here is for other people to listen to the mp3's not exactly copy them.
Thanks,

IANAL,
however, as far as I know, the copyright on music cd's says thet you are allowed to use them for personal use, but not for exposition or reproduction. The way I see it is that, if the owner is not using them, other people do not have legal rights to use them.

don't put MP3's on a corporate network... the company could get in serious trouble because of it. IIRC, the BSA regularly fines businesses for having MP3's on corporate networks
not to mention that you could get fired for doing so depending on the company

Ralinx is right, too many legal issues. Of course, everyone has a secret mp3 server out there. Remedy? host em from home

At my school a lot of the kids are using iTunes because it has a sharing feature, where people on the same lan can listen to your music (MP3 or AAC) but only listen. They are also using a program called MyTunes which lets you do more than listen...
So if they were bought from apple and shared on iTunes I gather that that is legal since iTunes allows it.
