I know this thread is a bit old now, but this worked for me. I have:
-a router
-a switch (8 port ethernet miniswitch)
-a box running Fedora Core2
-a box running Windows2000

My switch connects to the router.
My windows 2000 box and my Fedora box both simply plug into the switch.
I have internet access on both machines.
I can ping from my Windows box to the ip address of my Fedora box.

My Questions are these:
1. I can ping from my Windows box to the ip address of my Fedora box
and vica versa, but how do I actually access the files on each. Is this possible? How do I "see" files on each computer?
At the moment my Fedora isn't set up as a server, only as a desktop machine.

2. When I ping from my fedora box, it just keeps on going and going...how do I stop the ping, or just ping 4 times?

3. Will I be able to transfer files between the 2 boxes in this manner?
