Error with 2.6 Kernel: Fatal: Empty map section

I've installed 2.6.3 kernel on Knoppix 3.3 box.

First, could not boot in 2.6.3 kernel, so I did the following:

    root at xanadu:/boot# mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.2.6.3.gz
    /usr/src/linux.2.6.3#
    /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: /usr/src/linux.2.6.3#: Not a
    directory
/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: MODULES needs to be set to none?

    root at xanadu:/boot# lilo -t -v

    Fatal: Empty map section

Uh oh, Fatal: Empty map section, this doesn't look
good. Searching the web didn't turn up anything to
solve this...other than having map=/boot/map in
    lilo.conf...It is there.

    I re-ran lilo

    root at xanadu:/sbin# ./lilo
    Added Linux *
    Fatal: Empty map section

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Ok made some changes to lilo.conf and get a 2.6.3 prompt from lilo when rebooting.

Select it and only get this output

    load linux 2.6.3
    bios update successful

Then it goes to a blank screen, the hard drive spins
    and then stops.

Reboot again and select 2.4 kernel, it goes thru
    bootup stage and outputs

    fsck faild
    please repair manually & reboot
please note that the root file system is currently
mounted read-only. To mount it read-write

    #mount -n -o remount,rw /

or you can ctrl-d to reboot

Reboot with 2.4 and back in business.

Can I step back thru these commands again with 2.6?

    make mrproper
    make config or make xconfig
    make dep
    make clean
    make bzImage
    make modules
    make modules_install

Or what have I done wrong?

    thanks

I thought there was no make dep in 2.6?

    hello,
    i am wondering what countach44 is - i.e. is there a /boot/System.map there?

    No make clean either.

    Just
    make mrproper
    make config
make OR make bzImage & make modules & make modules_install

Re:Error with 2.6 Kernel: Fatal: Empty map section

Maybe I've missed something, but I don't see where you've run 'make install'. On my systems, that's what moves all the 'stuff' into place, including making an initrd, moving it (along with a System.map) into the /boot directory, and it even edits the grub.conf file.
