Graphics Editing

What can I use to edit graphics on my mac? I need something fairly powerfull, cannot get GIMP to work, and I want something I can obtain for free. As long as it can do some fairly advanced stuff, im fine...doesnt have to be like a photoshop grade thing.

and MacGIMP said it installed, but I couldnt find the binary.
