ah - opps, sorry, i don't always remember the junior in linux junior. well - have you run redhat-config-soundcard ? this can be done by pressing the redhat -> system settings -> soundcard detection. if that does not work then i suggest we install alsa. which is going to be the default sound system in the next release.

Yes, I've tried that but no sound card was detected.
Lets try installing alsa..
Check the ALSA 18xx driver page. They have some instructions that might prove fruitful.
Cheers
hello,
since i am lazy and like to do things easy lets make the installation easy!
download this (right click on it and do a save as):
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp....1.fr.i386.rpm
open a terminal and become root, i.e. su - and password.
cd to the directory where you save the file apt-0.5.15cnc3-0.1.fr.i386.rpm and then do a rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.15cnc3-0.1.fr.i386.rpm
this installs advanced package tool.
after this run apt-get install alsa - that should download what you need. then please refer to stryders144's link to configure it.

Is this by chance an ISA card? If so run 'sndconfig'. If that is missing, then I can look up the rpm that has it, but that is why it doesnt work. FC1 runs the ess cards just fine. I have several ;D
Knowing Compaq (I own one), it is a built in sound chip wired to the ISA bus. So, sndconfig should work. Of course, Compaq never did build computers that made much sense. Don't get me wrong, I have never had any problems with my Compaq (other than with the typical WinModem problem). I was thinking about turning my Compaq into a firewall once I buy another computer (ProStar has some reasonably priced desktop/notebook hybrids that look promising).
Anyway, don't give up, Delorean. Your problem, while most definitely frustrating, should be fixed soon. Just keep coming back to us with the results of your latest efforts and we will try to guide you on victory [I feel like Patton!].
Cheers
