No jro i didn't write that just posted it that is the work of god nows how many linux/Morrowind lover's i do however when i find recourses as such build automated installers for linux not just winsucks a $#%#$^#$ games but also linux games.
Gentoo is really nice but what about crux im telling ya people i don't understand this post there is 3 rpm based systems 1 ports/source based and 2 deb based when playing games on linux everything should be built to make the most of what hardware you have precompiled binary's just can't do that!
So here is what i would use.

    1. LFS (Linux from scratch)
    2. Gentoo
    3. Slackware (Built from scratch)
    4. Crux (Eather i586, i686, or Reiserfs4 Build)

And a Nvida card anything except the
    Nvida Mx 4000
1 Gig of Ram <------ pc133 is fairly cheap
Some form of Athlon Cpu 200FSB and up
    7500 RPM WD Harddrive
    A Asus MB <----- Except no imatation's
    ect ect
When i buy hardware it must be 100% linux compatable.

    Example
I just bought a new printer.
    Epson Stylus Cx3200 3in1
    Paid $80
    Purchased from epson
Ink cost around $5 for color & black
You can find deals on ink on ebay
    3 Black 2 Color $15
$4 for a ink chip reseter
so you can refill your ink
    Fully linux compatable.
And where did i find this
well linuxprint.org sugested this printer to me
so i bought it it is a little loud and a bit of and ink hog a guess i printed 50 pages and only used 10% of my ink so as far as games go i only buy game nown to work fairly well on linux via wine or what not.
Hell my wintv card doesn't even work on windows
why well it is older around win98 the drivers just never worked for it at all but on linux it just works perfectly!

i dunno what it is with you, but one second i hate you (like i hate everyone else)... then i look and the majority of your posts are useful... wtf? ;p

one little nit-pick with your post, reiser4 wouldn't help a game in the least, 99.9999999% of games (the only reason i don't say 100% is because i'm sure somebody out there is truly dumb) read all data into memory off of the FS before playing.

Just to interject my opinion, file system type would help performance. Seek and load times would improve for such things as in-game movies, new levels, restoring a saved game. I know, that doesn't effect say, framerates or anything but it does play a factor in the overall flow of the game.

maccorin have you ever tryed a reiser4 based
    system?
    A little info on reiser4
    http://www.namesys.com/v4/v4.html

reiser4 is 3 to 5 times faster than all other fileing system's.
Great for handling large multimedia files.
If everything screws up and your system die's then what's the point anyway.
    Hmmmmm thinking thinking.
    Contribute code maybe?
and if your reading all files in memory then wouldn't this be a great job for swap.

I only posted crux reiser4 because i seen a considerable performance increase
and i am looking into testing it with some games working out some bug as i go.
But it does seem to be worth looking at.
Ohh yah i hate you to

As Fatal error is on fire an anthrax nodule bursts and squirts maccorin in the eye.
Comtux run's lauphing like a mad man into the sunset as maccorin dies a very slow and painfull death.
Latter on Linuxfoo hold services for both of our brave linux geeks unfotunitly comtux has to piss and maccorin grave seem's more than just a good place to go.
Then as all of the members of linuxfoo return home something happens fatal error is just a little ticked about being set on fire even thought comtux express him self and trys to justify the attack fatal error will here no more of his excuses.
Comtux's life suddenly turns into a mdk4 match
fatal error rips comtux's head of takeing his spine with it and with great power shakes the earth with the words that will forever be engraved in the hearts of all men.

Fatal Error is not a gEEk.
Fatal Error does not believe in violence.
Fatal Error is worried about some of his fellow f00ies.
