This quote from Michael Dell's interview is pretty interesting:
MD: "The interesting thing is when we design and architect a server, we don't design it for Windows or Linux, we design it for both. We don't really care, as long as we're selling the one the customer wants. If a server goes down the production line, it doesn't really know what OS it has on it until the customer says, I want this OS. It could be Novell, SUSE, or whatever. "
They support RH and Novell et all on the server, but what about the desktop? That's where I become a potential buyer...when I can get a laptop with FC2 preloaded.
I guess its a matter of making a determination as to what Distro to use...do we go Slackware or Xandros for the customers? Potential customers surely wont have an array of OSs to choose from
They already sell Precision workstations with Red Hat.
I imagine you won't see Dell selling desktops with FC installed. The short release cycle would be a support nightmare (and hey, that's what Dell's good for, support.) Different problems could come up depending on how many revisions of Fedora you've installed, which versions you skipped, and so on (where with say, RH's WS release, long release cycles would make support easier.)
I think for ma and pa, you really want a linux distribution with a longer release cycle anyway. Or a very smooth upgrade because if anything doesn't work perfect after an upgrade they're not going to be able to fix it. (I'm hoping UserLinux fills this gap)
