I'm know that Nvidia and ATI put out their own Linux drivers, but then there are some third-party drivers out there as well (are these reverse engineered, or what?). I could see where open-source hardware drivers would be a huge help, but I know that the card manufactures guard their secrets with almost military tenacity...
