Thread: Realplayer install problem

    Realplayer install problem

    :

I downloaded RealPlayer and it came as a file named this:

    rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin.

    Couple things:

    a) did I download the wrong package

    b) what program is associated with .bin extension? I take it that it is some type of compression like .zip or .rar, but I don't know how to open it. Any ideas.

Is there a different program that will play Real content and streams>

    Thanks,

    John

    jhello,
as user root run this as the same directory as you have the file:
    ./rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin.
it will then run an installed - i think that is the same version i use at home...

i know mplayer has the ability to play some streaming stuff

Don't forget to make it executable before running it:

    chmod 755 rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin

Or another approach is to open it with sh:

    sh rp8_linux_alpha_rh62_cs1.bin

If you are using a Pentium based system I believe you have the wrong file.
By the name of it, it looks like the file you have is for a alpha system.
I would go back and download the file again and then use the suggestions above.

I am downloading the RMP for RH8. Will that work in FC?

    Thanks.

    Re:Realplayer install problem

I am not sure whether it will work or not.

If I were you i'd download the .bin file, it is easy to install.

Select the Linux 2.x (libc6 i386) option for your OS.

Then when you have it downloaded go to the directory you downloaded it to in the command line and type in these commands:

    chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

    ./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

notice on the second command there is a period before the forward slash.

    Re:Realplayer install problem

what does the period do? I see that a lot...

Do you know that code off the top of your head or do you need to refer to something? I'm always amazed that within a matter of minutes you Linux Gurus will respond with command line code that works.

    Re:Realplayer install problem

the period just means the directory you are currently in.

The command will start getting a lot easier the more you use the command line.
It actually start to get a lot faster to use the command line then using a GUI after a little while.

Did you get the Real Player install to work?

    Re:Realplayer install problem

What does it mean when you run an RPM, it seems to run through to the end, and then the little progress bar stops at the end and nothing else happens.

OK, in VERY simple terms, because my brain is fried and because I don't know much, what is the best way to obtain RealPlayer. I don't see a download for Fedora Core. Is there a Red Hat version I can download and install that will work?

Thanks very much. I know I'm a whiner.

    -Peace...
